Sine Wave Technologies brings over 15 years of experience in the application of power quality products to engineers, end-users, contractors, and builders. From residential needs all the way up to large industrial facilities, we can correct and eliminate your power quality problems.
What Is Transient Voltage?
An electrical transient is a temporary excess of voltage/current in an electrical circuit which only lasts milliseconds. They occur in all types of electrical, data, and communications circuits. Most people think of lightning as the primary cause of electrical anomalies, but 80% of transients are generated inside the facility. The simple act of turning on or off a light or electrical device can disturb the circuit and create a transient. Generally, the larger the load current of the device the greater the disturbance it causes.
What Do Transients Do?
Transients damage and destroy. The more sensitive the electronics in a device the more susceptible it is to damage by transients. Everyone knows a large surge (i.e. lightning strike) can destroy equipment in its electrical path. But did you know that even tiny surges can degrade the electronics in your PLC’s, drive electronics, and computers? Small surges caused by something as simple as turning on lights and switching on and off power supplies can damage electronics reducing their life span.
What Is The Solution?
We can advise you on the best transient voltage surge suppression (TVSS) devices to fit your needs and budget. A surge suppressor (not an arrestor) has low resistance built into its circuitry allowing excess current to enter the device before entering your electrical system. A surge suppressor will then redirect the excess voltage to its components and shunt the large transient to ground thus saving all of the electronic devices within the structure from damage. By installing surge suppression you will insure the longevity of all of your expensive electronics and equipment and changing fewer light bulbs!
If you can answer yes to any of the following questions, you need to consider surge suppression! Are you concerned about equipment downtime? Would you like to reduce your maintenance budget? Would you like reliable lightning protection? Are you replacing too many bulbs and ballasts, circuit boards, or circuit cards? Would you like to extend the life of your electronic equipment? Are you experiencing problems with your AC/DC drives? Sine Wave Technologies would be pleased to assist you in better understanding your electrical problems and the various power quality products available. Every situation is different, and we can advise you on the optimum product selection for your needs. For large commercial and industrial sites we would be pleased to conduct a site survey, pinpointing vulnerable areas and the correct application of our products for the best quality and most cost effective protection available — period. We also offer optional installation by our specially trained and bonded electrical contractors.
